More fun for Thanksgiving

The first crane guy in Redlands, said, "nope, can't do it".  Lesson learned....call the local guy first!

Turn Around, Turn Around

Hike to Look Out Point this morning, these two pics are literally taken in the same spot, just different directions.  Summit is open!

Sunday, November 1, 2020

Well...

I think he may have convinced Kyle to join him in the crazy.  I used to say 50 bucks and the fear of failure was all I needed to train like crazy for whatever event.  Now, even though the ante is gigantically more, it just doesn't motivate, and the fear of failure...meh, you win some you lose some.

7K

7K Crossfit this morning with Ker, it was hard, especially the second run.  After Crossfit we took Kael to Cross country practice and then went to the grand opening of the new Maple Hills trails.

It's a super nice private trail system, there are plans for a lot more trails.  We did the main School Loop, we walked it, it wouldn't be too hard to ride although my cardio is not so great right now and I would probably have to walk a few sections.  (Oh yeah, of course those are my abs in the first pic!)

Fall

Should we call it Fall?  I hope it's still happening this year.

Nice walk along Stanfield Marsh on Sunday, with a couple short sprints.

Squatober

Ker's trying to convince me to get a punchcard for her gym for when I'm up there...but do they do Squatober?  I think I need Runtober, there was no St. George marathon this year so that gives me a whole year to get ready for the next.

A Little Lightness

Remodeling and fires are not so fun, but here's something to make everyone smile.  We got to watch grandkids this weekend, on Sunday morning Ally decided that she and Papa were going on a bike ride.

She went to the garage, pulling Papa along with her, got her helmet on and her life vest and 2 sets of floaties.  Ultimate protection!

When Papa helps you put your floaties on!

Maddie and I went to get some very cool Heelys, Maddie had to show me how to start the car, I'm feeling very old and feeble.  It looked like a push button start, but that didn't work, so I tried putting a key in, that didn't work, so you have to insert the fob that looks like a usb stick and push a button--no; you turn the fob.  After we get the Heelys and get back to the car I'm trying to open the sliders and end up remote starting the car and the doors are now locked and I swear there's no on/off remote start on that fob.  Lucky for us the engine stopped, we got the doors open and went home with Heelys!

Running Up and Down the Mountain

Sounds like impressive amounts of training, right!  Ok a little clarification--running up and down the mountain in a vehicle.  I really didn't need more projects, but I needed a new place to park mountain bikes (that's my excuse anyway).  The other cabin project seems to be on interminable hold getting approvals from the Forest Service and this one is close to home and to Kerri, let's see what other reasons I can think of to justify it. We could probably put it on Airbnb when we get all the work done, but I think it'll get a lot of use.

First project, new electrical panel box, or I should say obtaining the permit for the box.  I'm not sure how long that will take.  The propane man is coming tomorrow to do the safety inspection and then the next project will be to get off of propane and run the natural gas to the street.  The kitchen is "quaint", I actually kinda like it, it has a lot of character, but will be on the to do list as it's really the best place to put a washer and dryer which means redoing the pantry...which means redoing all of the cabinets, which means appliances and countertops too.  When the kids were little one of my favorite children's books was "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie".  I think it's really an adult book and seems to sum up all those messy projects that just lead to an explosion of more projects. The bathroom has really low countertops that everyone who has seen it has pointed out, funny I think they're just right.

This also has magically answered the question I asked right before all of this Covid mess--Ikon or Epic, Ikon it is.  Lets hope Alterra resorts open this year.  Lets hope everything opens and soon.

A lot of row

A lot of deadlifts--63
A lot of hand release push ups.

Split Jerks

I don't think I've done split jerks before, I like the move, you've got a slight dip, but you're really driving with your legs for the lift.  33 lbs, this is one lift that would be pretty easy to go heavier. Another first today......I can't believe I'm saying this......burpee zen!  It was like, sure I can just do a few more of those and not even hate it!

*Scoring: One completed ladder is one round

It's just a tricky way of saying, "You're going to do so many pushups your arms will fall off."

Runs, Back Squats and Wall Balls

Jack
Kyran started mountain bike camp yesterday, look at him go. I'm hoping the top picture of Jack will go larger so you can see that cute picture of determination, he let me know when we were there his new bike is being built and will be there in August.

Kerri, Craig and Brad got a few runs in at Summit yesterday.  Craig did an early morning airport run with Brad this morning. I did back squats--63 and wall balls.

Pipes and Sand

Struggled with my overhead squats this morning, decided to do just pvc pipe for the WOD, but.....upped my ante here with pvc and sand!  That's a win--right?

parked my soul by the lake.

No bikes, no running, maybe a little walking, canoeing, kayaking and lots of fun with my Maine babies.

Grandkids, Granddogs, Grand Chaos!

Weekend cabin fun!  Mountain biking with the crew.  Maddie wants to do Puffer next time so we'll have to get a little serious.

Maddie and Katie getting a ride with Uncle Brent.

Bri and Brandon, I think Brandon liked getting his feet muddy the best.
Allie

The weekends are always too short.  We rode Snake Hollow on the way up, I thought I would practice some jumps, but chickened out.  I fell off one feature but got back on and cleared it.  We had so much fun with the littles (missed getting Reese's pic).  Maddie taught me a new card game, guess who won!  Katie had the "magic finger" for Pirate Battleship, she seemed to always point to just the right spot.

Friday-Saturday-Sunday

Friday--
Social distancing at Summit, see how far away we parked. Check out those pink pedals! And also note my seat height I have a dropper now, seriously life changing.

Snow Summit with Kerri and Kyle J

We rode this, then this:

Ate a lot of food and rode the first run again, all in all it was a really great day, just don't ask Kyle J. Something, something about sand on Skyline.

Saturday--

So some time ago I convinced Ker to do a Women Only mountain bike class at Skypark, the day of reckoning came and we went.  We had some time before the class so we rode up (no lifts) to the start of Sleigh Ride, rode it to Arrow, dodged a bunch of features and made it down.  I slammed my hand in the van slider and was pretty sure that would be a great reason not to do the class.  It was hard, way harder than it looks on any youtube video.  Anyway off to class we went and they rode us over to this fantastic little known area of fun features, far away from the shredders.  It was a great class that really started with fundamentals like bike/body separation, and body position which is so different from my roadie, tri background. I sorta learned to do front wheel lifts and the basics of how to do rear and both.  We also worked on descending, braking, and switchbacks.  The class went by so fast with so many skills to work on.
After the class I got a video of Kyle jumping:

We left, Kerri stayed and got a few more videos of Kyle, he did a really good run on a skinny and a teeter totter. Ker sprained her thumb to end the day.  It looks wicked.

Sunday:  Happy Father's Day to my dad, I miss you every day, to Craig, and to my sons who are fantastic, amazing, fathers.  I love you all.

Weekend love!

Thanks for the great ride, or maybe I should say bike 'n hike.  Lots of riding this weekend but the company is the best part.  Rode:  Secret Sauce, Snake Hollow, Bristlecone and I'm not sure what this crazy lift served ride is called, maybe just 2N10 to 2N08 to Town Trail. Knickerbocker had a sign saying it was intermediate, I was surprised, some of it was a little fast, not like steep fast just rolling pretty fast, I didn't think it was that technical.

The other part

to the pink pedals came.  Be still my roadie heart.

Pink Pedals

Umm, I already have some red ones, they're working perfectly fine.
Suspicious item in the mailbox.

100 Burpees

Crazy, right?!  I'm just gonna buy one of those "Help, I've fallen and can't get up" buttons.

Roots....

I rode over the roots, through some mud puddles, throw in a few wooden bridges and some downhill speed and it was a great day.  We rode Town Trail with Kerri and Kael, a nice double track to a great view of the lake, and another trail I think was Pine Knot before and after Town Trail.  Pine Knot was some pretty flowy single track that was lots of fun.  And not to forget the best part--lunch out!  I think it's the first time in 2 1/2 months Amangela's was the best!

Mom's to the Market

Weekend ride!  A little mild for the riding but a great weekend.  Bear Claw Poppy had a fatality this weekend, that was quite sobering to read.
Added a few new bikes to the family too!  I'm starting to lose count, this is a good thing.
Oh yeah, and Crossfit opened, I think I'll start back tomorrow.  Maybe.

Carriage Trail

Yesterday we rode Carriage Trail to Cocomaricopa, fun ride with some good uphill.  There was some loose rock on one descent that freaked me out a little, but I did ok riding through a couple sandy stretches.

You can see from the pic we climbed a little but it's all nice double track. Ker and I signed up for mountain bike preschool next month so I've gotta get some good conditioning rides in.

Wheels

We rode Bear Claw Poppy this weekend. While I was getting my roots touched up Craig went to hang out at the bike shop.  The bike that Ker has been trying to find was there!  The new bike Craig has been looking at was not there, but.....there was this Megatower. So we left with two bikes and came home with four.
I rode the Megatower a little, it's a 29er and I'm riding a 27, there's always this wheel issue when you're short, especially on the road, maybe not so much on a mountain bike.  Let me tell you though, I loved the 29er.  What I liked is it just eats up the rocks and the obstacles, so if you're a less skilled rider maybe you don't have to be quite so careful.  That may also have to do with the travel, I'm not sure what it is on the Megatower but I'm assuming it's a lot. Another thing about this bike--electronic shifting.  There's not much to say about electronic shifting, just do it, it's amazing.  The electronic dropper post is pretty cool too, but to be honest I'm not sure I could tell a lot of difference.
Conventional wisdom is that 27 wheels turns better, this is probably true, I didn't ride long enough, with enough turns on the 29er to make that call.  What I think though, is not having to be quite as careful with your line may compensate for it.  I don't know but, I do know Craig is going to love this bike.

Edit:  By the way that's three new bikes in one week, just a few more of you need some new wheels, what else can you do in quarantine?

GoPro Dust

I dusted off the GoPro and got a little serious about learning to use it with Brent here to tutor me.  He left me with the advice to use it all the time and watch one youtube video a day; so here I am, as puzzled, stumped, stymied as ever.  I took it out to this morning to San Timoteo, they've opened some of the trails and so we hiked the nature preserve today.  I took lots of short clips and managed to let the GoPro create the video for me, not bad, they even put the music in.  But....I can't get the video out of the app, I'm not sure if the file is too big or maybe my computer is too not updated. My first video was Papa giving Reese a KitKat right before they had to leave--favorite grandpa!  I'm going to try to put it on here.

Kona Marathon--Cancelled

Entries are deferred until 2021, lots more training time right Cleve!

Novato

Quick trip to Novato to add a little hardware to the van.

After we finished up we did some hiking near Stinson Beach and started towards home.  The one thing I didn't want to do was drive through the city in the beast, as luck would have it for some reason we got routed through the city.  Imagine the surface streets with no traffic, it was kinda surreal.
Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve--this is just outside of Santa Maria and the beach is beautiful.  The surrounding dunes are home to nesting birds.  This area is surrounded by strawberry farms.
 Check out those strawberries!
We made a few more stops down the coast, I had never seen the elephant seal rookery at Cambria, that's an amazing sight, there were literally thousands of beached seals that return there every year.
More driving than anything but we did get a good hike and a beach walk with a little bird viewing.
How do you like the 1 Up?  Checking out step stools as we speak, which probably defeats the purpose of the extra storage in the gigantic box.  #vanlife

San Timoteo Nature Sanctuary--Locked

So it's baking time, white chocolate, macadamia nut cookies.  Keto's not going so well.
Kev called to let me know Mont Tremblant is cancelled, it's not totally unexpected, but still disappointing.  Ironman California is on for October 2021, downhill swim, flat bike, flat run, he was trying to tempt me.  My willpower is woefully inadequate (see above pic) I think I can say no.

Mini goals

Straight up Sunset Loop

1. Stay on my bike --- almost, had some seat issues
2. Do a little dance after I make it up Serpentine. --- yay, rode Serpentine, no dance see #1
3. Ride my nemesis mini hill -- Check! Really it's only about 50 yards, but I hate it
4. Do a little dance after I pass Caroline Park -- dance had to wait until I got home, see #1
5. Smile all the way around the point and home! Check!

Trail #2

We did Trail #2 starting off of Sunset and ending at Helen right below the watertower.  This would be less technical for a single track ride except right at the top of Sunset it's pretty steep and there is a small section on the trail that is pretty overgrown.  Beautiful day today and the extent of the view is amazing, we could see clear to the Cajon Pass.

Exploring our backyard...

And the rain stopped.  This morning we headed out towards the point and around to one of the Redlands Conservancy trails. We took trail #1, off to the left it becomes a rolling dirt trail which you can branch off several ways but we took it back towards Oakmont, up a little summit, over to Sutherland and home.  It would be a great single track ride.

Rain

Just rain and quarantine, but "they" say we are starting to turn a corner and flatten the curve.  I can only hope that's true.  I'm still working half days so at least I get to walk from the employee lot to my office everyday, maybe I can record that on Strava! Ha-one time I forgot to change my watch from run to ride so of course I displaced some Strava King and did I get a nasty message, don't mess with Strava egos.  Now I'm just bored and rambling, hopefully no rain tomorrow so I can ramble on about a ride.

Sunset Loop

5 miles today, it's been awhile since we've been able to see our house from Sunset.  I suppose we can call this practice retirement.  I may need a hobby or two in addition to trying to score tp online from Costco.  Almost today, almost, got it in the cart, paid for, and then immediately got an email my order was cancelled.
